La quarta inchiesta del commissario Wallander.

Nel sud della Scania coperta dalla fitta nebbia di ottobre, l’avvocato Gustaf Torstensson viene trovato morto all'interno della sua auto. Per la polizia di Ystad si tratta di un incidente.
Intanto, Kurt Wallander è deciso a porre termine alla sua carriera di poliziotto, ma quando viene a sapere che qualcuno ha sparato al suo amico Sten Torstensson, il figlio di Gustaf, decide di tornare a Ystad e riprendere servizio per un'altra, appassionante indagine.
